Call for Pianists: Tapestry Opera's New Opera 101 Workshop + Tapestry Songbook on Jan 31-Feb 1 in Toronto

At the end of the month, I'm excited to be joining mezzo soprano Krisztina Szabó in coaching at Tapestry Opera's New Opera 101 workshop. A bit more about the program:
New Opera 101 is intended not only as a tool for the growth of artists but as a way for Tapestry to discover emerging talent. On January 31 and February 1st, 2014, Tapestry will offer a two day intensive for singers and collaborative pianists. Artistic Director and stage director Michael Mori, star mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó, and collaborative pianist Dr. Christopher Foley will coach participants and address the demanding role of singers and pianists in interpreting new opera. Each performer will be coached in an aria or duet from the Tapestry Songbook – a library of produced operas from Tapestry’s 33 year history. Participants may have the opportunity to perform alongside Ms. Szabó and Dr. Foley on the evening of Saturday February 1st, in the The Tapestry Songbook concert.
Although there are several confirmed pianists in the workshop, we are still looking for two more. In case you're interested, Tapestry is offering a discounted workshop fee of $100 for the entire workshop(!) which includes two days of coachings with Krisztina, Michael Mori, and myself, as well as a mainstage performance at the Tapestry Songbook event on Saturday night.

If you're able to be in Toronto at the end of January and are interested in developing the skillset for coaching contemporary opera as a pianist, this is definitely a workshop that you should consider.

For more information you can email Michael Mori at mmori [at] tapestryopera dot com. You can also email me at collaborativepiano [at] gmail dot com for further details. The extended deadline is Friday, January 10.  There probably isn't time to submit a recording, so a quick reference from a teacher/colleague will be enough.

Call for Composers and Librettists: The Tapestry New Opera 2011 LibLab

One of the most difficult but ultimately satisfying things that one can achieve as a composer or writer is the herculean feat of writing an opera. Few are the composers who have not fallen under its spell at some time in their lives.

But many questions remain for both writers and composers: how on earth do you learn to create such a wonderful work of art? How do you find a librettist who can feed you the story you need? How do you find a composer you can trust to make your words come to life? Under what circumstances can you create a viable working process between the two of you?

And above all: where on earth can you go to actually learn the trade of writing an opera from people who actually know what they're talking about and who create operas on a regular basis?

You go to Toronto's Tapestry New Opera.

Yes, the 2011 running of the Composer/Librettist Laboratory is happening from August 22 to September 1, and Tapestry is looking for four writers and four composers who are eager to take the plunge and start the ball rolling on the next round of opera creation both at Tapestry and across North America.

With New Opera, Small Is In

An article by Anne Midgette in the July 4th Washington Post looks at the ability of smaller opera companies to deliver on successfully creating, developing, and producing new operas. Anne looks at recent projects by Wolf Trap Opera, Long Beach Opera, Cinnabar Opera, Maryland Opera Studio, and Opera Alterna as paving the way for composers and librettists learning the art form.

What she omits in the article was the fact that there are several companies in North America that are already viewed as leaders in the development of new operatic work, namely Tapestry New Opera Works (which runs its annual Composer/Librettist Laboratory next month), Queen of Puddings (whose Songs and Scenes program finished a few days ago), and American Opera Projects. The production of chamber-size contemporary operas is really nothing new, but has in many ways become a necessity with recent economic belt-tightening.

If you're interested in the possibilities inherent in contemporary opera, this is a definite must-see.  I played piano in the orchestra and have already seen it several times during Opera To Go 2008.  And yes, McGregor Socks was indeed a corporate sponsor for the film...

Collaborative Pianist Needed for New Opera Project in Italy

Although much is written about the growing infrastructure of English-language contemporary opera, it's important to realize that opera creation is alive and well in opera's birthplace, Italy. This summer in Citta della Pieve, the International Opera Theater will be premiering Romeo e Giulietta, a new opera in Italian by American composer and Juilliard graduate Emily Wong.

For this production the IOT is seeking a collaborative pianist to act as repetiteur and orchestral pianist. The rehearsal process runs from August 1 to 25, with performances August 26-28 in Citta della Pieve's Teatro Avvaloranti and August 30 in Orvieto (to be confirmed). IOT will provide an honorarium of 300 Euros, as well as housing and four group dinners. The pianist will be responsible for travel to and from Italy.

In case you're interested, you can contact Karen Saillant (the director of Romeo e Giulietta) at karen [at] internationaloperatheater dot org.

Stich: A New A Cappella Opera

Those of you in the Toronto area might want to check out Stitch, an a cappella opera with libretto by Anna Chatterton (perhaps one of the busiest and most dedicated librettists Canada has seen) and music by Juliet Palmer. Produced by the urbanvessel collective, this is an opera about clothes and the people who make them:

From the abuse of the sweatshop to the fantasy of costume and the empowerment of sewing-it-yourself, the sewing machine has been a force for liberation and exploitation since its invention in the 19th century. Anchored in the sounds and rhythms of sewing, Stitch uncovers the emotional layers of the relationship between woman and barely-tamed machine.

Hemmed in by the language of sewing and the inexorable rhythm of the machine, three women fight to find space for imagination and individuality. From the sweet 3-part stylings of “Cowl-neck Blues” to the fierce interlocked minimalism of “Chain stitch, Lock stitch, Whip stitch”, Stitch gives voice to the unseen women who clothe us.

Stitch will be performed by Neema Bickersteth, Christine Duncan, and Patricia O'Callaghan, and runs March 12-16 at Lennox Contemporary at 12 Ossington Avenue as part of Harbourfront World Stage. Tickets are $10 matinee/$20 evening.
