Stephen Harper Performs with Yo-Yo Ma: Canada is Governed by a Collaborative Pianist

Collaborative pianists are slowly taking over the western world. First there was former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Now it's Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. From the National Arts Centre last night:

  1. Whoah -- are we ever jealous, down here in the USA. Let's see, we had Clinton, who played (I think) clarinet or saxophone (does that count as an instrument?) and Nixon played pian----- ewwwwwwwww.

You guys win. Your PM is a dude!

  3. The song is very apropos, since the only reason Mr. Harper's minority government survived a recent vote of non-confidence is because he made a deal with the left-wing New Democratic Party. With a little help from his friends indeed...

  4. I wonder how he'd feel if we cut a percentage of the keys off his piano.....

  5. Simple, Tyler - he would boast that he had expanded the range of the keyboard ;)

  6. Does this mean he'll dedicate more money towards the arts this round?

  7. Well, yeah, playing the piano or singing seems to be very stylish nowadays. Even among political representatives. I'm just wondering what Harper wanted to achieve - I mean, if it's just for fun or whether he thinks he could get votes by doing this.

  8. No politician would do something as risky as this unless there is a potential political payoff.
