I've added a few things to the list of Required and Preferred Skills for the Collaborative Pianist, including being able to use text capabilities of cell phones (ie. "Can U acc m2 at auds?") , and the importance of having an answering machine or service attached to every phone line.
If you notice anything I've omitted from the list, please comment either here or on the skills list and it can be added should it be viable. I'm thinking of adding a "Technology skills" section, although I still need to give the subject more thought before I proceed.
Another skill that came to mind today was extreme patience in situations where I know more than the singer's instructor! Especially seeing as I have no choice but to work with said instructor on a weekly basis and can't believe the things that do or don't come out of the instructor's mouth! (The instruction is never harmful for the voice, just very ineffective) Patience and an ability to keep my mouth tightly closed.
ReplyDeleteOne of my teachers had a cardinal rule when navigating the profession: "Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut". This maxim has saved my butt on more than one occasion. I still need to work on the patience thing, though.
